A Visit to the Doc...

We toured the Baldwin Home, originally build in the early 1800's. The medical missionary Dwight Baldwin lived here with his family from the mid 1830s to 1868. Most interesting things: scary medical devices like a tooth puller, a Steinway piano and Blue Willow china that took one year to ship and a "very sophisticated" (so said our tour guide) chamber pot. We learned that Hawaii was a bustling trade center and had the only printing press and high school in the US west of the Rockies in the mid 1800s. AND the islands supplied much of the food to San Francisco in the gold rush years. Posted by Picasa
